How To Shoot Your Own Video

The video journey

Recently, we were approached by the Business Development Manager at Spire Sussex Hospital about filming a patient journey that presents the services offered at this leading private hospital. We have produce all kinds of videos, from practitioner introductions, treatment overviews, product or training videos – basically, if you have an idea or something to sell, we can rise to the occasion.

However, we really love producing these corporate-style videos that allow us to work closely with the client on how best to showcase their clinic, practice or hospital for potential patients. Gavin and Sophie, the Business Development Management, had a number of conversations prior to the shoot to establish exactly what they were hoping to achieve and so we could get a rough shot list – no one wants to walk away from a shoot realising they missed an important component of the end product!

On a beautiful Saturday in October, our video man Aaron and Gavin (we’ll call him director, he likes that) had an early start to get down to Spire Sussex to scout the location for the various scenes and best light spots before a shoot start of 9am. Working days and hours tend not to figure in video work as, understandably, a busy working practice or hospital can’t suspend normal business while we shoot.

Shoots like this are usually great fun, on the day everyone pulls together to get all the required footage. The staff in the video are made up of actors and real staff, Gavin even has a blink and you miss it cameo in the film.

The next stage is where all the magic happens – editing! There was loads of fantastic footage to choose from – four hours in all – but the brief was to produce a three minute video and tell the story, so lots of great stuff does really end up on the cutting room floor.

We were also writing a script and recording a voice over, so once the first edit was done to our satisfaction, I got down to writing. I thoroughly researched the Spire Sussex and main Spire site to ensure that all content was ‘on message’ and then edited it to match the video. One option was to send the script in a document and video edit without sound, but I always feel that it’s much harder for clients to see how it all fits. So, we recorded the voice over and laid it over the footage.

This was sent to Sophie for feedback and amends. This is always the slightly scary moment where you hope your vision for the video matches the client’s, but Sophie and the team at Spire Sussex were delighted and just had a couple of tweaks to the script and requested we find another shot to replace one in the video (the angle it was taken showed an untidy area of the physio room, all the stuff you don’t want prospective patients to see!).

So, the final edited video was sent to Sophie, who responded instantly with, “We love the video! Can’t wait to get it uploaded.” As part of the package they opted for, we created a YouTube channel for them and uploaded and optimised the video.

We loved working on this project and were really pleased to get these kind words from Sophie and the team at Spire Sussex:

“BHM Media have been really helpful and professional since the start. We are very pleased with the outcome of the videos we have had produced and would have no hesitations in recommending or using them again. Gavin really put the team at ease and was willing to accommodate our requests on the day.”

6 questions you may have about video production

We make videos for lots of people – these are the top 6 questions we get asked by people thinking about having a video produced.

  1. Isn’t it expensive?  Our shoots start at £500.  This will create a fully-edited clip uploaded to YouTube and inserted on your website.
  2. Where does my video get shown? The most obvious place is your website.  We also upload your video to YouTube which means not only is your video available to search engines but anyone can share your video on their own websites or social networks.
  3. Do I need technical knowledge?  We do the whole thing.  From shooting, editing, graphics and uploading to YouTube.  If you have more than one video we can even create your own YouTube channel.
  4. Do I have to learn the script?  We have worked with hundreds of companies over the years and some learn the script and some ad lib.  The important thing to remember is that you don’t have to nail it first take.  We’ll wait for you to get warmed up and you’ll find that you’re a natural.  Our team are easy going and expert at putting you at ease.
  5. How long does it take?  Once filming is complete we go away and edit.  We usually have a completed video within a week for you to approve.
  6. What’s the point?  Video is the most effective method of communication.  If you see clients face to face then creating a video of yourself enables your client to ‘meet’ you before they even book an appointment and can be the reason they pick up the phone.  It also enables you to get across a lot of information in a very short amount of time.  If you’re serious about your marketing then this is a component that shouldn’t be missed.

Talk to us about creating a video.  It’s an essential part of your marketing portfolio that can get your name out there without breaking the bank.  Call Katharine on 07768 571 493 or email KG@BHMmedia.com or use our contact page.

Specialist info page headerYou may have noticed in the past couple of years that the internet has morphed from a largely text-based medium into a very diverse video channel. Images and sounds are more powerful that words and today 300 hours of video will be uploaded to YouTube every minute.

Healthcare is particularly well suited to video; it ensures an efficient transfer of information and it enables prospective patients to ‘meet’ the surgeon or doctor before they get anywhere near a waiting room.

SpecialistInfo.com and TreatmentAdviser.com are two leading resources for patients seeking information on medical and health treatments and contact details and between them they generate half a million page views per month.

Spire Cambridge

It’s a real honour to do work for such a prestigious company as The Spire Hospital Group. The Group has 38 hospitals and 11 private clinics throughout the UK and we have worked with a number of them.

This particular project was for Spire in Cambridge.

The brief: Spire Cambridge wanted to achieve two things with their video package. They were keen to increase the profile of a number of its practitioners and they also had two new procedures/treatments that they wished to promote.

So we were engaged to shoot a series of videos of their specialist consultants who performed these procedures. We also did a lovely interview with a very satisfied customers – the best kind of customer you can get.

The finished product: Here is a small selection of the work we did:

Dr Stephen Middleton introduces the Smart Pill

Introducing the Nuss Procedure with Mr Marco Scarci

Deedee Dobell – A Satisfied Customer

CCKat Aesthetics

CC Kat is one of the UK’s leading plastic surgeons. Since leaving her NHS practice, CC and her husband Dr Kat, have built an outstanding private practice in the heart of Birmingham.

Brief: The team at CC Kat Aesthetics definitely have their game on when it comes to social media and blogging on their website, but they wished to explore the possibilities of video for online marketing.

The clinic offers a full range of treatments from plastic surgery consultations (all performed at the top private hospitals in the area) to skincare. CC and Dr Kat wished to produce a series of videos that promoted this range of treatments, including their cutting-edge laser treatments and PRP with the MesoGun.

They also wished to promote that they are able to carry out an increasing number of surgical procedures in clinic, such as VASER – cue us all having to scrub up and poor Dr Kat having to have a pretend VASER treatment to the abdomen.

It’s very much a team effort at CC Kat Aesthetics and the front of camera duties were shared by CC, Dr Kat, Tash and Kelly. The clinic is so beautiful, that our video guy Steve was able to take lots of footage for cutaways. The clinic intro video is particularly amazing and showcases the fantastic set up.

The finished product: We are currently at the editing stage of the videos so please check back…

Cynosure

CynosureFor us working with Cynosure was really exciting. A high profile laser company in the UK supplying most of the industry leaders with medical laser equipment.

Brief: To provide mini profiles and case studies for their clients to showcase their work.  After buying a machine we go in and work with the client to introduce themselves, their clinic and to document a case study.

We collaborate closely with the client on the script so they’re totally comfortable in what they have to say on camera.  Some clients can memorise whole scripts, others ad lib their way through, or some prefer us to ask questions which we run through in advance (we then edit out our director’s words in the edit process which makes it sounds like it’s scripted!) so regardless of which method we use we always end up with a great shoot.

The case studies are always done on a real live client!  Depending on the treatment we usually follow up in a few weeks’ time and document the effectiveness of the procedure.

The finished product: Mr Rob Warr, Cosmetic Surgeon – The Look Amazing Clinic, Cheltenham

The Cosmetic Skin Clinic

The brief: Create a promotional video for The Cosmetic Skin clinic run by Dr Tracy Mountford.  The clinic is located in Stoke Poges,  near Slough in Berkshire.   We love working with this company and are big fans of Jean and the rest of the team. Tracy not only runs a very successful clinic but she is also very highly regarded in the aesthetics industry. So great to work with companies that you like and respect!

The finished product: We were so proud of this video and highlights exactly the standards that you can and should expect from a corporate video.

Professor Laurence Kirwan

ImageProfessor Laurence Kirwan is a leading plastic surgeon who has busy private cosmetic surgery practices in both the UK and US.

Brief: Professor Kirwan opted for our treatment video package. This consist of seven short informative videos that give prospective patients the chance of ‘meeting’ their plastic surgeon before even coming in for a consultation.

These videos work on a  number of different levels. As well as proving a very useful tool for prospective patients, they can be optimised on YouTube for your top cosmetic surgery procedures. Once they are YouTube, the world’s second largest search engine, they can also be used in your website. Any website with video is rewarded by Google in its searches.

We had a great day with Professor Kirwan at his cosmetic surgery practice on London’s Harley Street. We always allow plenty of time in our video shoots to ensure that the customer is comfortable in front of the camera and gets the information across that they want included in their videos. Some customers need a little longer or a few more takes to get all the material they want, but Professor Kirwan was spot on each take.
