Google+ & Google My Business

This is one of the most essential networks and possible one of the easiest to manage. Google search is essentially a directory and one that seven out of ten people now use as their default search service. Google loves local search and with the advent of mobile and proximity technology it is the undisputed leader in the market (think of it like a Yellow Pages but for the 21st Century). The listing is free and links to your website.  If done correctly this can be one of the cheapest and most effective marketing activities you can do. Facebook

Facebook (at the time of writing) has 1.71 billion active users. Incredible when you think it started in a dorm only a decade ago. Although social isn’t always valuable in the healthcare sector it’s worth acknowledging for the simple reason that to many people Facebook IS the internet. Many users can go months without ever leaving the walls of Facebook and if you are going to put yourself out there then this is a channel that you shouldn’t be ignoring. Not only should you be sharing content on this platform and actively engaging with people but advertising is also relatively cheap if you’re trying to build it up quickly.

Youtube

Youtube is the worlds second largest search engine. With over 1 billion users in 2015 over 400 hours of video were uploaded every minute. And it’s owned by Google. So anything you do on Youtube contributes massively to your search engine efforts. Youtube is very valuable for healthcare and medical practitioners because people use it to specifically find information. Creating a series of videos explaining procedures and then grouping them into your own branded channel can be a hugely valuable endeavour and you’ll get people watching you for years to come. It’s also a great opportunity to introduce yourself to your clients before they actually meet you.

Twitter

About 500 million tweets are dispatched every 24 hours and the network has some 250 million active users. But a note of warning.  Unlike Facebook and Youtube it’s very difficult to ‘sell’ on this network. Engagement with a Twitter audience is nuanced and you need to tread carefully. Rather than simply broadcasting you need to be listening and building up your network. Follow your peers and share ideas not just about work but about who you are.
