Getting listed with local companies is a time-consuming business but it does have two distinct benefits:

1. Whilst Google controls about 95% of the search engine traffic not everyone uses search engines to find what they’re looking for.  So even if a listing site gets you one referral a year it’s a zero cost to attract that client.

2. Google actually take into consideration how active you are on listing sites and directories – it shows you have credibility and you are engaging with the online world.

I suggest you don’t try and do this in one sitting as it’s quite dull work but perhaps dedicate a couple of hours once a week to it and in time you’ll have a long list of sites that you’re signed up to.  Here’s a list to be getting on with but don’t forget that you will have associations and clubs that you will be member of and local organisations that will also carry listings.
